This field trip will start at Asilomar at 10:45 am on Sunday, January 10th. We will start with a tour at the Hopkins Marine Station at 11:00 am. Around noon, we'll take a short walk to our wine tasting venue for a tasting and lunch. After lunch, we'll hop on a shuttle and go to the Pacific Grove Monarch overwintering site, containing the largest publicly viewable population of overwintering monarchs in Monterey County. Transportation to, from and between sites is included in the field trip fee (TBA).
California Condor Viewing Tour to Big Sur State Park (Sunday, January 10th, 8:00 am)
This all-day trip (8:00 am to ~4:00 pm) will involve a tour of the Point Sur Lighthouse, one of the windiest places along the scenic Big Sur coastline, followed by a California Condor viewing tour led by the Ventana Wildlife Society, which is in charge of reintroducing and tracking California Condors in central coastal California and currently has over 60 birds that they are following.
Guided Nature Walk (Thursday, January 14, 9:00 am)
The Asilomar grounds are 107 acres of mostly sandy beach. The Nature Walk will take you on a tour around the Asilomar State Beach, within the boundary of Asilomar Marine Reserve. The walk is easy and will take roughly 1 hour. The beach and bluff walk provide ready access to some spectacular coastline, tide pools, marine mammal and offshore preserve, kelp beds, and more. At our 2014 meeting, there was easy whale watching from the beach at Asilomar. The nature walk will start at 9:00 am on Thursday, January 14th. If you prefer to take a self-guided tour, you can follow the Julia Morgan Architecture, Living Architecture, Living Dunes and Coast Trail and Forest Walk, available here.
